DesignerCon 2014: Toy Art Gallery, Sofubi, Kaiju and More!

DesignerCon has continued to grow each year and the amount of not only attendees grows, so does the vendors list. We have been there for three years now and DCon has definitely become one of our top favorite cons or events to attend. One of the reasons we love DCon is because of Toy Art Gallery who always brings some of their amazing designer toys that you can not find anywhere else. The Angry Koala Gear crew has been blessed with Toy Art Gallery and the Creative Director, Gino Joukar of inviting our own Matt Perez aka Obscure of doing a few pieces at a few of their incredible Custom Toy and Art shows over the couple of years. Toy Art Gallery has their location on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles. They have an amazing collection of Kaiju, Sofubi, extremely rare one offs, Kidrobot, ThreeA Toys, t-shirts, paintings, to gigantic designer toys that will blow your minds. During DCon, we had to stop at the booth to see what they brought along and they had a few great surprises with their own produced soft vinyl Sofubi Kaiju pieces including TKom's Doublethink and Kenth Toy Works Crossbone Zombie

Here are a few of legend Tim Clarke's Totims. Tim Clarke created Mattel's Boglins back in the day which we remember growing up. He helped sculpt and design the Mystics and Slaves from Dark Crystal!

TKom's GITD Doublethink that was an extremely rare piece for DCon. There were only 10 raffled off to purchase for the weekend. We actually scored the very last one on Sunday's drawing! We were definitely very excited. Doublethink was produced by TAG.

Kenth Toy Works Crossbone Zombie was such a great piece. This one was also produced by Toy Art Gallery.

Here were a couple of the DesignerCon 2014 exclusive painted Crossbone Zombies from Ken Toy Works.

A few prototypes of pieces that will be created in the future by Toy Art Gallery.

This piece was definitely very quite impressive!! This was definitely Kaiju at its finest. This would be the debut sneak peek of what is to come for Toy Art Gallery x Miscreation Toys Cestoda. This thing was a beast that was huge, which is why it is Mega Kaiju. This picture does not serve its size justice except in the amazing details in this piece.

We scored big by winning the very last GITD Doublethink yesterday and having TKom sign it!

We got an extra bonus by TKom signing and doing a Doublethink sketch on our Mega Munny.

Toy Art Gallery was definitely one of our favorite spots for DCon this weekend. If you get a chance, pay them a visit at their location on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles.

Toy Art Gallery's 4th Anniversary Show Custom "Numa-ju" By Obscure

Toy Art Gallery (TAG) is getting ready to celebrate their 4th Anniversary this Saturday, September 14th with a bang! They are hosting another amazing custom toy show where they have invited over 50 of the most respected and talented custom toy artists in the industry who have customized Paul Kaiju's Pollen Kaiser figure.

One of the artists who was invited to this amazing event is Angry Koala Gear's own Obscure. Obscure has his custom Hell Lotus, "Ring of Fire" at the Toy Art Gallery, which was part of Super Cooper's "Music to My Ears" show. Obscure's latest work is titled, "Numa-ju" which will be in Toy Art Gallery's 4th Anniversary show this Saturday.

Numa-ju -  One of Obscure's proudest accomplishments in art, was being added to the artist list at the Toy Art Gallery.  He was honored to be invited to take part in the Toy Art Gallery's 4th Anniversary show, which will feature customs of Paul Kaiju's Pollen Kaiser figure.  Obscure will be among more than 50 of the most respected and talented custom toy artists in the industry, which is a feat that he did not take lightly.  The Pollen Kaiser stands at an impressive 10" without it's staff.  Obscure was intimidated by the Japanese soft vinyl giant, being his first custom of a kaiju toy.  (Fill in what you think about it).  Numa-ju translates to Swamp Beast in English.  He is an insect inspired swamp creature, on the hunt for his next victim.

Obscure will be in attendance at Toy Art Gallery's 4th Anniversary show this Saturday. If you want to see more of his works, just visit Obscure's Corner on our site.

A Small Look at TAG and Gino Joukar's Impressive Collection

I made my first visit to the Toy Art Gallery a little over a month ago on my way to a show that I was a featured artist, Steampunk Los Angeles.  There are many stores that offer gallery areas or space for display of shows and art exhibitions, but the Toy Art Gallery is a gallery first.  While there, I decided to put myself out there, and ask the Assistant Manager, Connell, about how an artist can get into the Toy Art Gallery's artist list.  I showed him my Dia de Los Muertos Hello Kitty, which he liked as well as my custom Bad Bad Buddha (Beefy & Co), "Bad Bad Ganesha," which he was also impressed with.  He then referred me to the gallery's founder and president, Gino Joukar.  So I took the intimidating step forward, and emailed Gino with a request to get onto their artist list, along with some pictures of some of my customs.  To my excitement, Gino really liked my work.  He then extended an invitation to me to take part in a few of their upcoming shows, which include Super Cooper's birthday show, "Music to My Ears."  I was also invited to take part in the Toy Art Gallery's Anniversary show, which will feature customs of the Paul Kaiju/TAG's "Pollen Kaiser" figure and Blamo's 5th Anniversary show, which will feature customs of the "Billy" wooden figure.   As a fairly new and a not yet well-known artist, you could understand my gratitude for being welcomed into the TAG's list of artists.

Following the San Diego Comic Con, I asked Gino if he could find space for my two custom Bad Bad Buddha's at the Gallery for display and sale.  He was gracious enough to take in my two sizable pieces and then invited me to meet with him at the Toy Art Gallery's warehouse to see a part of his massive collection of toys and first edition prints.  This was an exciting opportunity, which I gladly accepted.  I had no idea what I was going to see.  When I arrived at the warehouse, it was amazing to say the least.  What I saw there, was merely a small portion of Gino's full collection.  This small portion, would blow most, maybe all other complete toy collections, out of the water.  It was more of an experience, than a simple visit.  While there, Gino gave me a peak on few upcoming projects, and future plans for an extension of the Toy Art Gallery... The Toy Art Museum?!?

Holding my Nathan Hamill, Strife and Sire for customizing... Thanks Gino!
There is a lot to be said about Gino.  He is a big art collector, but he is not only a collector, he is also a supporter.  He welcomed me into his list of artists, he invited me to see part of his collection and gave me a sneak peak of future plans.  Above and beyond all of that, he also gave me a couple of gifts, including a new Luftkaiser (prior to it's July 31, 2013 release) and a Nathan Hamill, Strife and Sire, to customize, which will eventually be up at the Toy Art Gallery.  Gino is a great guy, and a good new friend.  I appreciate all he has already done for me and for the designer/art toy scene.  Here is a link to an interview with Gino Joukar on Sour Harvest.
4" Luft Kaiser's official release is set for Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 12:00 pm PST

If you haven't done so already, do yourself a favor and visit the Toy Art Gallery.  If you love art and/or toys, you will most definitely love the gallery.  While you are at it, you can buy a toy, maybe one of my custom Bad Bad Buddha's.
