From the international fan favorite Spawn comic book universe, Curse of the Spawn is set in a futuristic world in the throes of apocalypse, when Evil stands at the threshold of victory. Spawn #221 Sells Out With Todd McFarlane's Return

SPAWN #220 was a banner issue for the long-running title, as it celebrated its twentieth year of publication with creator Todd McFarlane's name appearing once more in the writing and covers credits. And the series shows no signs of slowing as SPAWN #221 sold out at the distributor level the same week as it was released and the story takes a new turn and a new tone.

Jim Downing, the newest Hellspawn, has been a man without a past and with a future that is out of his control. However, as SPAWN delves deeper into his story, Jim will begin to embrace his powers, encounter old enemies, and uncover the secrets that lie at the center of the circles of Hell.

"As we head into the second half of the year, in which we will have another twelve issues completed — making that 27 consecutive issues by the same creative team — the Spawn comic is starting to hit its stride," said McFarlane. "With the continuing growth of our new main character and the shift to a darker tone, the book is now becoming the blueprint for what we hope to unveil in other entertainment arenas."

Spawn Gets a New Look

Last month, Image Comics announced that Chris Giarrusso (G-MAN) would be creating special "cute" versions of the covers of classic Image titles, the first of which was YOUNGBLOOD, issued as a special limited-run variants cover of YOUNGBLOOD #71. Now, Image is unveiling the next cover in this series, a re-creation of SPAWN #1 by Todd McFarlane.

The colorful and friendly (two adjectives not normally associated with SPAWN) Giarrusso cover is one of seven variants produced for SPAWN #220 that commemorate the series' twentieth anniversary. The variants include two homages to classic Image series, drawn by McFarlane —“Savage Spawn,” referencing the first issue of SAVAGE DRAGON by Erik Larsen (Cover B - APR120410) and "Youngblood Spawn," after the first issue of Rob Liefeld's YOUNGBLOOD (Cover C - APR120411).

McFarlane returns to writing his iconic comics series with SPAWN #220, with art by Szymon Kudranski, in which twenty years of SPAWN twists and turns will begin to coalesce as Jim Downing embraces the full might of his horrific hell-born powers to piece together a mystery that has ties to the very core of the Spawn universe.

SPAWN #220 will be in stores on June 6 and can be pre-ordered from the April issue of PREVIEWS. Giarrusso's limited variant cover can be ordered with the code MAR128274.

McFarlane Toys is Coming to Phoenix Comicon

   
It’s that time again…The 2012 Phoenix Comicon is ready for the invasion of fans this May 25-27 at the Phoenix Convention Center and so is the McFarlane Companies. At this year’s event, fans can celebrate comics and pop culture with comic greats like Whilce Portacio, David Finch, and George Perez. You can also rub elbow with The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal, the original TV Hulk Lou Ferrigno, and Star Trek captains William Shatner and Patrick Stewart, along with the rest of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast.

Todd McFarlane's Spawn #220 Pays Tribute to Image Comics 20th Years in Comics

In 1992, Spawn, a new kind of superhero, stepped onto the comics stage under the banner of the newly formed Image Comics. Twenty years later, Todd McFarlane’s creation has become an iconic character in the superhero world, spawning into spin-offs, toys, an animated series, and a blockbuster movie…But the SPAWN comic book series has always been the center of that empire.

In celebration of SPAWN’s 20th anniversary, McFarlane will return this June as cover artist on his flagship title for the remainder of 2012. McFarlane will also take lead writing for this commemorative issue, SPAWN #220.

SPAWN #220 will also have a variant cover paying tribute to Rob Liefeld's YOUNGBLOOD #1 (Cover C - APR120411), as well as an original cover from McFarlane himself (Cover A -
APR120409). A black-and-white variant of each of the covers will be available as an incentive for retailers.

In addition, current SPAWN artist Szymon Kudranski has created a cover based on the original SPAWN #1 cover by McFarlane for the SPAWN: 20th Anniversary Collector's Special (APR120418). This special edition of SPAWN #220 publishes Kudranski's interior art in black-and-white along with additional content featuring a look back at a sampling of TODD McFARLANE's inked pages from SPAWN #1. It is limited to 2500 copies.

McFarlane has embarked on this seven-month tribute not just to celebrate SPAWN's and Image Comics’ 20th anniversary, but also to honor the rich history of all comic books.

“Early in my career one of the things I looked forward to after I finished the interiors on a book, was to sit back and try and come up with a single image that would catch the fan’s attention,” said McFarlane. “I had a pretty decent run with some of the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Spawn covers, and I’m going to come back and see if I can draw a few covers that will intrigue everybody.” 

SPAWN #220 will be available for order in the April issue of Previews and in stores on June 6th.

Spawn Celebrating 20 Years with Apparel at Tilly's

Spawn’s 20th Anniversary is in full swing and what better way to show your hellspawn pride then to wear it proudly across your chest. Travis Barker, Blink 182 drummer and creator of the popular apparel company Famous Stars & Straps, has teamed up with comic book legend Todd McFarlane to release this new line of licensed Spawn t-shirts to celebrate 20 years of Spawn.

Spawn: The Beginning Resin Statue from McFarlane Toys

It is amazing thinking about Todd McFarlane creating Spawn nearly 20 years ago, which will actually be making this landmark in just a few months! Spawn is one of those favorite series I had in the early 90's and it was part of my new favorite company, Image Comics that was bringing out many new great series to the industry. Along with Spawn, I enjoyed other Image Comics such as Wetworks, Wildcats, Savage Dragon and Youngblood. Two years later after Image Comics and Spawn were created thanks to Todd McFarlane and others, he then took a huge step forward to build a brand new toy company, McFarlane Toys in 1994.

Todd McFarlane not only helped me to enjoy comics, but he also helped me to start collecting toys again as I used to as a child. The new Spawn toys were incredible with amazing detail that no other toy company could touch. I remember these toys being very difficult to find in stores unless you were friends with one of the employees, especially if you were trying to get that very desirable Malebolgia.

 Beginning this October, Todd McFarlane's long-running creator-owned series SPAWN will welcome comics legend Michael Golden to the team as he signs on as the series' regular cover artist.

Revered amongst comic book pros and fans alike since bursting onto the scene in the mid-'70s, Golden is perhaps best known for his work on Micronauts and The 'Nam. He has worked on virtually every major character in comics from Superman to Spider-Man, from the X-Men to the Avengers  – and well beyond when you add his amazing cover work to the tally.

Since his new life as the Hellspawn began, Jim Downing has been at odds with his new life. Now, following his confrontation with Clown, Jim is ready to step from the shadows and claim his place as a new messiah for the Digital Age.
