Fox Searchlight's Sound of My Voice at Wondercon

At Wondercon we had the chance to sit in on Fox Searchlight panel for The Sound of My Voice. The film is directed by Zal Batmanglij. He also co-wrote the film with Brit Marling. I went in not knowing anything about the movie. The first 12 minutes of the film was shown at Wondercon.

The movie is about a couple who are trying to create a documentary and expose Maggie, the cult leader from the year 2054. After getting into the cult, things for the couple start to fall apart.  You can see the first 12 minutes below.

In the panel we watched the first 12 minutes of the film. Everyone in the hall was silent except the laughter after the elaborate handshake. By the way, I will learn the handshake. I received a poster with step by step instructions.

After watching the 12 minutes, we were greeted by two 'members' of the cult that invite us to learn more about Maggie. They then left the stage.

Moderator, Jenna Busch, brought out Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling to discuss the film.

There's something about The Sound of My Voice that is unnerving. Maybe it's the fact that cults do exist or the weird ritual and secrecy you see people go through in order to meet Maggie. What ever it is, I'm ready to see it.
